Lyrics Music St. Francis

Rolled Into One

I had the privilege of writing and playing music for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon in the 1970s and ’80s.

Rolled Into One was written in 1977 and is on my album Love Seeds. This song is rather cryptic. First of all, it could appear to talk from a perspective of someone enlightened, and if you listen to the lyrics it sounds like “I’m gonna give you light”, when actually it’s “Aum gonna give you light”. I, personally, am not claiming to give anyone light here, though I do envision blessings. Part of my spiritual self-study and practice was chanting the mantra “Aum” continuously for 15 minutes a day for several years. If you’ve ever chanted anything for 15 minutes, you’ll know that your personality tends to dissolve into the feeling experience and your intellectual processes become suspended, allowing space for inspiration. “Aum”, in particular, is a special sound, said to encompass all sound, from the wide-open mouth to the closed lips, to the tongue on the roof of the mouth and the teeth closed to vibrate the cranium and stimulate the head chakras. The intention of chanting “Aum” is to let your supposed boundaries dissolve into the oneness of all things. It is not uncommon for light to be experienced with one’s eyes closed, and it is not uncommon to realize things, come to understand things about oneself, when one takes the time to focus on an aspect of experience, or just watch thoughts pass. “Light”, colloquially is synonymous with “Understanding”. So, this song is really saying that if you take the time and focus to chant “Aum” properly you can come to understandings about yourself and others, realize all as a oneness, and learn to love yourself and others. That is, the regular practice of “Aum” is gonna give you light and love. The song is NOT saying “I’m an enlightened one”. I’m just a regular guy, but self-studies always bring some understanding, and I was taught to do 15 minutes of spiritual reading, followed by 15 minutes of chanting and feeling “Aum”, followed by 15 minutes of meditation and contemplation on a daily basis. In truth, however, the secret ingredient is a qualified and inspiring teacher who can empower your study. Bottom line… be joyful and love. Appreciate.

Lyrics

Rolled Into One

I have unfolded, I’ve been renewed.
I’ve seen it clearly, what God can do.

Aum gonna give you light, Aum gonna give you light.
It’s the best thing I could give to you.
Aum gonna give you light, Aum gonna give you light.
Aum gonna give you light, Aum gonna give you light.

Aum gonna give you love, Aum gonna give you love.
It’s the best thing I could give to you.
Aum gonna give you love, Aum gonna give you love.
Aum gonna give you love, Aum gonna give you love.

I am your brother and sister, your Dad and your Mom,
Your niece and your nephew, your Uncle and your Aunt.
Your Grandma and Grandpa and your daughter and your son,
An all of your relatives, rolled in to one.

I am both friend and stranger, present, future, and the past,
More than one can think of, more than one can ask.
I am my very own father and my very own son,
And all my relatives, rolled into one.

And I am you, and I am one. There’s good and bad, they say.
But what I see, wherever I look, is God experience to me.
