Music St. Francis

Song of St. Francis

I had the privilege of writing and playing music for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Portland, Oregon in the ’70s and the ’80s.

On October 4th, 2015, Feast of St. Francis, the current “folk group” was joined by musicians and singers from the folk group who had performed at the church’s 100th Anniversary, in 1981. The celebration was recorded and the resulting album, Songs of St. Francis, is available for download here.

The Song of St. Francis was written in 1974 and recorded in 2015 at the 30-year reunion/celebration of the 100th anniversary of the church.

Lyrics:

Intro:
I used to get upset and be so weak,
And think of places that I’d rather be,
And worry about the time.
Uneasy was my mind.
But now I am an instrument of Peace.

Verse 1:
When I see hatred, I sing a song of love.
When I see injury, pardon is my song.
When I see doubt, my faith will put it out.
I like to sing it every day, what the good Lord does for me.

Verse 2:
When I see despair, I sing a song of hope.
When I see darkness, I sing a song of light.
When I see sadness, I sing a song of joy.
I like to live it every day, what the good Lord does for me.

Bridge:
If you empty out your cup, the Lord will fill it up.
Oo, oo, oo, give consolation.
The Lord comes from the heart. You’ve got to let it start.
Oo, oo, oo, give understanding and love.

Verse 3:
Through God’s great love, in giving we receive.
Through God’s great love, in pardoning we are pardoned.
And when death knocks, eternal life walks through the door.
I sing a song of everything, that the good Lord does for me.
